Things happen when we go on road trips; relationships might break down or new bonds could be forged.
This is a good idea, having Will Ferrell and one of his best friends drive cross-country as a way of finding out where they stand after what happened during the pandemic: Andrew Steele, Emmy-winning Saturday Night Live writer, had suddenly transitioned and become Harper. As the road trip begins, Ferrell feels free to ask any question and Harper is tested at different venues, including a bar in Oklahoma where she gets a decent and friendly welcome. There are other more challenging moments, though.
A thoughtful, funny and gripping way of approaching the trans issues that, sadly, are part of the culture wars.
2024-U.S. 114 min. Color. Directed by Josh Greenbaum.
Trivia: Co-produced by Ferrell. Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Seth Meyers and Tracy Morgan make appearances.
Last word: “We’re just talking in the film, it’s as simple as that. You see me struggling with how I phrase certain things at times. ‘Am I asking it the right way?’ Hopefully the film will demystify just having a conversation about it.” (Ferrell, Time Magazine)
