Under the Volcano

A vacationing Ukrainian family is left stranded in Tenerife after Russia’s invasion of their country in February, 2022.

A good idea for a drama that makes you ponder what you would do in a similar situation. The film cleverly uses Tenerife’s volcanic landscape as a symbol of geopolitical uncertainty; there are also comparisons between the family and the plight of North African migrants.

Ultimately, though, it’s a meandering movie that doesn’t have much of an emotional impact.

2024-Poland. 102 min. Color. Directed by Damian Kocur. Cast: Sofia Berezovska (Sofia Kovalenko), Roman Lutskyi (Roman Kovalenko), Anastasiya Karpenko (Anastasiya Kovalenko), Fedir Pugachov (Fedir Kovalenko).

Trivia: Original title: Pod wulkanem
