The Six Triple Eight

WHEN AMERICA NEEDED HOPE, THEY DELIVERED.

In the waning days of World War II, an all-female, all-Black unit is sent to Europe on an impossible mission: making sure that millions of letters are finally delivered to loved ones back home.

Even when Tyler Perry aims for something this ambitious, he can’t seem to make it work. Based on a magazine article from 2019, this reality-based story about racism, misogyny and courage within the armed forces could have been one hell of a movie, but never feels authentic enough or moving in an honest way.

Characters written as stereotypes don’t help.

2024-U.S. 127 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Tyler Perry. Song: “The Journey” (Diane Warren). Cast: Kerry Washington (Charity Adams), Ebony Obsidian (Lena Derricott), Dean Norris (General Halt), Sam Waterston, Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon.

Trivia: Co-produced by Perry; co-executive produced by Washington.
