After seven successful seasons of The Golden Girls, Bea Arthur was ready to move on. Out of this situation came the idea to create a spin-off sitcom where the three remaining characters on the show sold their house in Miami and started running a small hotel together with a manager (Don Cheadle) and a chef (Cheech Marin).
For some reason, there was also a kid around who lasted for 14 episodes, until he was written out.
A contrived set-up, but enjoyable enough for fans of the old show, even if Arthur was sorely missed. She did come back for a two-episode appearance, however, and there were many other notable guests throughout the show’s only season.
