The Doors

THE ULTIMATE STORY OF SEX, DRUGS & ROCK ‘N’ ROLL.

Released the same year as JFK, this portrait of The Doors is set in the same period and shares its visual style. It made an impression on young audiences who connected with the idea of Jim Morrison as a countercultural rebel.

Val Kilmer is perfect, but as a biography there isn’t much meat on the bone; plenty of psychedelic drugs though. Technically attractive, some will enjoy the film as an acid trip that captures the culture and chaos… others will be bored.

1991-U.S. 141 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Oliver Stone. Screenplay: J. Randal Johnson, Oliver Stone. Cinematography: Robert Richardson. Cast: Val Kilmer (Jim Morrison), Kevin Dillon (John Densmore), Kyle MacLachlan (Ray Manzarek), Kathleen Quinlan, Meg Ryan, Frank Whaley, Crispin Glover, Billy Idol, Michael Madsen… Mimi Rogers, Paul Williams, Michael Wincott, Oliver Stone, Titus Welliver.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Ron Howard. Before Stone signed on, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese considered making a movie about the band. Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Timothy Hutton were considered for the lead role.
