The 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse

DR. MABUSE IS ON THE LOOSE!

When a journalist is murdered in Berlin, there is reason to ask oneself: has a long gone villain resurfaced?

Fritz Lang’s last picture is a fitting end to a career that began in Germany, took a thrilling Hollywood detour and then returned. 30 years have passed since the last Mabuse film; both Berlin and Lang have been through a lot, but this doesn’t look like an aging filmmaker’s farewell, but rather a young man’s tale of espionage with generous amounts of shootings, explosions and chases.

The story is somewhat convoluted, but Gert Fröbe is the right person to play an updated Inspector Lohmann.

1960-West Germany-Italy-France. 103 min. B/W. Directed by Fritz Lang. Screenplay: Fritz Lang, Heinz Oskar Wuttig. Novel: Jan Fethke (”Mr. Tot Buys a Thousand Eyes”). Cast: Peter van Eyck (Henry Travers), Dawn Addams (Marion Menil), Gert Fröbe (Inspector Kras), Werner Peters, Wolfgang Preiss, Andrea Checchi.

Trivia: Original title: Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse. The titular villain next appeared in The Return of Doctor Mabuse (1961).
