Red Desert

THIS IS THE STORY OF A WOMAN… HER HIDDEN THIRSTS AND HUNGERS…

After a car accident, Giuliana (Monica Vitti), who’s married to a factory manager in Ravenna, Italy, feels increasingly strange and isolated.

Michelangelo Antonioni’s first film in color follows in the path of his trilogy that began with L’Avventura (1960), painting a portrait of a woman whose family life (and flirt with Richard Harris’s visiting businessman) only seems to make her more lonely.

The vastness of industrialism is used to great effect in several scenes, and Vitti is good, but ultimately the film feels empty.

1964-Italy-France. 120 min. Color. Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. Screenplay: Michelangelo Antonioni, Tonino Guerra. Cinematography: Carlo Di Palma. Cast: Monica Vitti (Giuliana), Richard Harris (Corrado Zeller), Xenia Valderi (Linda), Rita Renoir, Carlo Chionetti.

Trivia: Original title: Il deserto rosso.

Venice: Golden Lion.
