In 2008, Max Manus was a huge hit in Norway, and this film is a companion piece, another well-made portrait of the seminal figures of the resistance movement that fought Nazi occupiers in Norway during the war.

The titular ”Number 24” was an accountant who would go on to become the most decorated war hero in his nation’s history.

Much of the script follows Gunnar Sønsteby and his allies during the war, but the film is also framed by the elderly Sønsteby’s visit to a school where the students confront him with his (not always honorable) past, adding complexity.
