My Spy

HE’S A PRO. SHE’S A NATURAL.

When a nine-year-old (Chloe Coleman) exposes a CIA operation where her family (who has ties to an arms dealer) is under surveillance, she decides to blackmail the agent in charge, J.J. (Dave Bautista).

Echoes of Kindergarten Cop (1990) in this comedy where a brawny CIA agent, whose missions usually end in chaos, has to deal with a savvy kid; naturally, it turns out they need each other.

The story has few laughs and zero credibility, but it’s sweet and benefits from Bautista’s sincere performance.

2020-U.S. 99 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Peter Segal. Cast: Dave Bautista (J.J.), Chloe Coleman (Sophie), Kristen Schaal (Bobbi), Parisa Fitz-Henley, Ken Jeong, Devere Rogers.

Trivia: Co-produced by Bautista. Filmed in 2018 and delayed more than a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Followed by My Spy: The Eternal City (2024).
