Mothers’ Instinct

SOMETIMES IT’S THE ONLY THING YOU CAN TRUST.

In 1960, the death of a child comes between two suburban women (Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway) who are friends and neighbors.

This American remake of a French film (and novel) also became cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s directing debut. Critics labeled the original ”Hitchcockian”, but this film lacks the kind of style, elegance and wicked sense of humor that we associate with the Master; this looks more like your average ’90s thriller.

The characters are less than believable, but it’s fun to see Hathaway in a different role for her.

2024-U.S. 94 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed and photographed by Benoît Delhomme. Novel: Barbara Abel. Cast: Jessica Chastain (Alice), Anne Hathaway (Céline), Anders Danielsen Lie (Simon), Josh Charles (Damian), Eamon O’Connell, Caroline Lagerfelt.

Trivia: Co-produced by Chastain and Hathaway. Olivier Masset-Depasse, who made the original film, intended to direct this remake, but had to drop out.
