Based on the bestseller, this adaptation also became a hit, charming audiences with its romance and providing fodder for discussions about domestic violence and how to deal with it. That part of the film is more compelling than the love affair, convincingly illustrating how easy it is to deceive oneself when love is involved.

No simple answers, which is good. Effective lead performances.
