HE PUTS THE GREEN IN MEAN.
The green Grinch (Jim Carrey) hates Christmas and the people of Whoville hate him, but a little girl (Taylor Momsen) wants to change that.
Director Ron Howard is sadly saddled with his Toys (1992) or Popeye (1980), i.e. a noisy, expensive disaster of a movie made by a good filmmaker who may be suffering from temporary insanity.
The production design looks artificial, the camera never stops moving and the film’s cute moments are more sickening than anything else. The barely recognizable Carrey is wasted.
2000-U.S. 105 min. Color. Directed by Ron Howard. Book: Dr. Seuss. Music: James Horner. Makeup: Rick Baker, Gail Ryan. Quote: “The nerve of those Whos. Inviting me down there – and on such short notice. Even if I wanted to go my schedule wouldn’t allow it. Four o’clock, wallow in self pity; 4:30, stare into the abyss; 5:00, solve world hunger, tell no one. 5:30, jazzercize. 6:30, dinner with me. I can’t cancel that again. 7:00, wrestle with my self-loathing; I’m booked. Of course, if I bump the loathing to 9 I could still be done in time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness. But what would I wear?” (Carrey gets an invitation from the people of Whoville)
