ISRAEL, 1973… ONE WOMAN STOOD BETWEEN VICTORY AND DEFEAT.
In 1973, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir (Helen Mirren) tries to save her country after a coordinated surprise attack from Syria and Egypt.
A portrait of Meir’s darkest hour as leader of her country, depicting Israel’s strategy to counter its enemies without risking American support, but also how she struggled with poor health and the burden of responsibility for young men dying on both fronts.
Helped by excellent makeup, Mirren transforms into Golda; Liev Schreiber also makes a convincing Kissinger. Uneven visual effects and storytelling, though.
2023-U.S.-U.K. 100 min. Color. Directed by Guy Nattiv. Cast: Helen Mirren (Golda Meir), Camille Cottin (Lou Kaddar), Rami Heuberger (Moshe Dayan), Liev Schreiber, Rotem Keinan, Ohad Knoller.
