Emily the Criminal

A young woman (Aubrey Plaza) in Los Angeles is deep in debt and gets drawn into a credit-card fraud ring and a relationship with one of its leading figures (Theo Rossi).

A postcard from the L.A. underworld, signed by John Patton Ford in his directing debut, who was inspired by his own experiences as a restaurant worker struggling with debts. Plaza is engaging as a woman in dire straits who quickly realizes that the scam she gets involved with isn’t as harmless as she was led to believe.

A well-made film, but not really as penetrating in its social commentary as it wishes to be.

2022-U.S. 93 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by John Patton Ford. Cast: Aubrey Plaza (Emily Benetto), Theo Rossi (Youcef Haddad), Megalyn Echikunwoke (Liz), Gina Gershon, Jonathan Avigdori, Bernardo Badillo.

Trivia: Co-produced by Plaza.
