Dune

A WORLD BEYOND YOUR EXPERIENCE, BEYOND YOUR IMAGINATION.

Sometime in the future, somewhere in the universe, the Emperor is planning to have a young man (Kyle MacLachlan), who could pose a threat, killed.

David Lynch’s greatest failure has a certain cult following and looks like a slightly more intellectual Star Wars, where everybody wants control of a drug referred to as ”the spice”; expect palace intrigues, sand worms and telepathy.

Good music, colorful cast, but on the whole it’s also alternately dull and ridiculous.

1984-U.S. 140 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by David Lynch. Novel: Frank Herbert. Cinematography: Freddie Francis. Music: Toto, Brian Eno. Cast: Kyle MacLachlan (Paul Atreides), Francesca Annis (Lady Jessica), Brad Dourif (Piter De Vries), José Ferrer, Linda Hunt, Freddie Jones, Virginia Madsen, Silvana Mangano, Siân Phillips, Jürgen Prochnow, Sting, Dean Stockwell, Patrick Stewart, Max von Sydow, Sean Young.

Trivia: Also released in a 186-min. version. Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Kevin Costner were considered for the lead role. Ridley Scott was considered for directing duties; at one point, Alejandro Jodorowsky also planned to make the movie. Remade as a miniseries, Dune (2000), and two feature films,  Dune: Part One (2021) and Part Two (2024).
