Diamonds Are Forever

James Bond (Sean Connery) goes undercover as a diamond smuggler to locate a large amount of stolen gems; it turns out that Blofeld (Charles Gray) is once again responsible.

The seventh Bond flick saw Connery make a comeback; he’s still got it, but his heart doesn’t really seem to be in it. A large chunk of the story takes place in Las Vegas; the action packs a certain punch, especially the finale on an oil rig, but the story is nothing special.

On the other hand, we do get to see Blofeld in drag (!) and there’s a couple of gay hitmen. An unusual chapter of the Bond saga indeed.

1971-U.K.-U.S. 119 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Guy Hamilton. Novel: Ian Fleming. Song: ”Diamonds Are Forever” (performed by Shirley Bassey). Cast: Sean Connery (James Bond), Jill St. John (Tiffany Case), Charles Gray (Ernst Stavro Blofeld), Lana Wood, Jimmy Dean, Bruce Cabot, Bernard Lee, Desmond Llewelyn, Lois Maxwell.

Trivia: Connery’s final film as Bond (except for Never Say Never Again (1983)); before he was hired, George Lazenby was offered to continue, but declined. Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds and Robert Wagner were considered for the role. Followed by Live and Let Die (1973).
