Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

SAME BRIDGET. BRAND NEW DIARY.

Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is very happy with Mark (Colin Firth), but trouble is brewing in the shape of jealousy – and the return of Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant).

This sequel to Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) is the kind of film that doesn’t demand your full attention. Never abandoning the formula, the (four) writers have worked hard to come up with ways to continue a story that was essentially complete in the first place. Results are episodic and mildly amusing.

The contrivances grow annoying after a while, but Grant is always a welcome sight.

2004-U.S.-U.K.-France-Germany-Ireland. 108 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Beeban Kidron. Screenplay: Richard Curtis, Helen Fielding, Andrew Davies, Adam Brooks. Novel: Helen Fielding. Cast: Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones), Colin Firth (Mark Darcy), Hugh Grant (Daniel Cleaver), Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, Jacinda Barrett, Celia Imrie.

Trivia: Followed by Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016).
