THE VIEW MAY BE BEAUTIFUL, BUT YOU CAN’T EAT IT.
A Cornwall fisherman (Edward Rowe) watches his community fall apart, as his brother (Giles King) takes visiting tourists on cruise trips.
Some labeled it a masterpiece. True or not, there were many who recognized something in Mark Jenkin’s film that touched them, a depiction of the effects of gentrification on a small community. A deeply personal project, the film looks like it was made in the 1930s and recently found, raspy and worn.
At times, Jenkin plays around with the timeline, offering us hints of what’s to come, but it’s hard to fuse the emotions of the story with this visual experiment.
