A Knight’s Tale

HE WILL ROCK YOU.

Sometime in the 14th century, a squire (Heath Ledger) assumes a knight’s title and jousts his way into a girl’s heart while also challenging a competitor (Rufus Sewell).

A medieval romp partly based on the works of Geoffrey Chaucer (who’s played by Paul Bettany) with intentional anachronisms; expect people dancing to Bowie’s “Golden Years”. That silliness works to some charming effect and the cast has its benefits, including Ledger’s performance.

But, sadly, you always know where this overlong flick is heading and writer-director Brian Helgeland’s crowd-pleasing attempts are a little too obvious.

2001-U.S. 132 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Brian Helgeland. Cast: Heath Ledger (William Thatcher), Mark Addy (Roland), Rufus Sewell (Adhemar of Anjou), Paul Bettany, Shannyn Sossamon, Alan Tudyk, Bérénice Bejo.
