A sweet, moving documentary that cleverly reminded Swedish audiences of how they’ve developed a bond with TV personality Filip Hammar and his family over the years, in various projects.
In this case, Hammar’s relationship with his father Lars is front and center. Ever since Lars retired, he’s become listless, a painful fact to Filip who remembers his family’s 1980s holiday trips to the French coast. Together with best friend Fredrik Wikingsson, he takes Lars on a last journey to the continent. Manipulation is a key theme, as Filip pulls out all stops to recreate childhood memories, without letting Lars know how far he goes.
A tightly directed film where the outcome is fairly obvious, but laughs and tears are guaranteed in a charming but frank portrait of aging.
2024-Sweden. 90 min. Color. Written and directed by Filip Hammar, Fredrik Wikingsson.
