Garbo: Leave Me Alone

A documentary that tries to capture the essence and mystery of one of the great screen icons.

Tracing Greta Garbo’s beginnings in Sweden working as a salesgirl, then traveling to the U.S. where she became a huge movie star, until she retired at the age of 36, the film spends a lot of time researching a period in her life that we already know a lot about and not enough on the last five decades, when she was perceived as a recluse living in New York City. Still, Lorna Tucker and the people she interviews, including Swedish filmmakers and Garbo experts Lena Einhorn and Stig Björkman, shed light on Garbo’s dilemma.

An artistic touch is added at times in the shape of a Garbo mask, its symbolism quite effective.

2024-U.K. 90 min. Color-B/W. Written and directed by Lorna Tucker. Narrated by Noomi Rapace.

Trivia: Alternative title: Garbo: Where Did You Go?. Co-executive produced by Rapace.
