The Mechanic

SOMEONE HAS TO FIX THE PROBLEMS.

After following orders and killing his old mentor (Donald Sutherland), an assassin (Jason Statham) befriends his reckless son (Ben Foster) and teaches him the trade.

An update of the 1972 thriller that pretty much does the expected; one could argue that Statham is the Charles Bronson of this era. Moves faster than the original, with a weaker ending and greater brutality; a few action sequences are very bloody and little else.

Foster is good as the unpredictable student, but we don’t get much of a grip on the two men’s bond.

2011-U.S. 93 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Simon West. Cast: Jason Statham (Arthur Bishop), Ben Foster (Steve McKenna), Tony Goldwyn (Dean Sanderson), Donald Sutherland, Jeff Chase, John McConnell, David Leitch.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Irwin Winkler. Followed by Mechanic: Resurrection (2016).
