His Three Daughters

Three sisters (Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen), who are not very close, gather in a New York City apartment to watch over their dad who’s in hospice care.

As they wait for the inevitable that the nurse tells them will happen soon, we get to know these very different women and what motivates them. Superior performances in this intimate, dialogue-driven chamber piece, including Coon as the practical but uptight older sister, Lyonne as the weed-smoking, vulnerable youngest one, and Olsen who’s frequently trapped between them.

The film explores family dynamics in familiar but truthful and engaging ways, leading up to a moving climax.

2024-U.S. 101 min. Color. Written and directed by Azazel Jacobs. Cast: Carrie Coon (Katie), Natasha Lyonne (Rachel), Elizabeth Olsen (Christina), Jay O. Sanders, Jovan Adepo, Rudy Galvan.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Maya Rudolph and the three leads.

Last word: “When I moved back to New York, I saw a window that I had before becoming more of a caretaker [for my parents] would take over, and this window I could use to tell this story. I’ve had people pass before me, and I’ve gone through this strange experience with how time moves that I really wanted to replicate with this film, and at the same time, I was very much facing this reality in my own family’s life. I wanted to express not only my fears about it but also my hopes.” (Jacobs, Indiewire)
