The Deliverance

EVERY FAMILY HAS ITS DEMONS.

As if Ebony Jackson (Andra Day) doesn’t have enough on her plate, including alcoholism and a demanding mother (Glenn Close), something strange is going on in the house where she just moved in together with her kids.

Inspired by a real-life case of supposed demonic possession, this horror movie initially seems more interested in depicting a struggling working-class family. It does benefit from a good cast, including a showy Close.

Most of the horror in the film, however, is ineffective, especially that dull last half-hour.

2024-U.S. 112 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Lee Daniels. Cast: Andra Day (Ebony Jackson), Glenn Close (Alberta Jackson), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Bernice James), Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Caleb McLaughlin.

Trivia: Co-produced by Daniels. Octavia Spencer was first cast in Mo’Nique’s role.
