Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

ALL NEW! THE REVOLT OF THE APES. THE MOST AWESOME SPECTACLE IN THE ANNALS OF SCIENCE FICTION!

The third, fourth and fifth films in this Planet of the Apes series explore how apes came to rule the Earth.

In the near future, in the year of 1991, the United States is a dictatorship and apes are held as slaves and pets. There is widespread fear of the animals’ impressive intelligence, and we get to witness the rise of the new Messiah, Caesar (Roddy McDowall).

Plenty of symbolism and social critique, but the new theme, a comparison between the apes’ situation and 19th century slavery in America, is in pretty poor taste.

1972-U.S. 87 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by J. Lee Thompson. Cast: Roddy McDowall (Caesar), Don Murray (Breck), Ricardo Montalban (Armando), Natalie Trundy, Severn Darden, Hari Rhodes.

Trivia: Followed by Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973).
